A world waiting to be explored

The postman he was...

Ramlal loved his job, for he was loved by one and all, the kids, the youth and the old. He was a source of smile for the most. A postman he was, a very familiar one, and a really trustworthy one. By now, he was familiar with everyone in the society, and his polite manner and decent behaviour made him all the more lovable. Kids loved him, and would often ask him to buy them the same uniform Ramlal used to wear. He would ask them to come with him to get the uniform. The kids then laughingly used to run away. Though, it was a joke but for Ramlal, the kids, the families in the society were the only family he had.

Yes, Ramlal was alone, lonely, had one child who had shifted to some place far away from his residence. His wife, who died a year ago, was his sole companion. At work, he was very punctual, and did it passionately. He would often love to go to societies where he had become a familiar face, and would even fight for the same. But everybody there understood it, because for Ramlal, those people were all he had for a family.

It was one rainy morning, when Ramlal had to go to his beloved society. The rain was too hard for the 58 year old to go and deliver the posts, but he knew that there might be some mother waiting for a post from his son posted to a distant land, a father waiting for a mail from his son who is fighting at the border, and more. He was all set to set out when his senior at work, told him not to go. Ramlal, stubborn as always, refuted, and said his health is far less important than the purpose for which he was going.

“But there isn’t any post that reads urgent, or important”, said the officer.

Ramlal was on his way, he did not care about what people had to say. When he stepped outside, he realized how heavy the downpour was, and by then, even the roads were waterlogged with no means of transport. It seemed an uphill task till the time he did not reach the society.

The roads were full of water, and it was difficult to reach the houses. Ramlal’s physical strength had seen enough of it since morning. And with the never ending rain, his health was deteriorating faster. His breath was breaking, and since it was raining, nobody bothered to come outside, rather they did not notice somebody is calling from outside, someone far away from the door.

Ramlal fell down, with his bag containing letters, perhaps the weight of the bag drenched in water had become too much for the lean skinny old man to bear. Running out of breath, he looked at the heavens, his loved ones were calling him, and so was his call of duty. He tried to stand up, to reach to one door, the one door that might open many doors. Helpless as ever, he could not get up even after repeated trials. The water level had reached knee height, and it took some real effort for him to keep his head sustained above the water level. He was losing his will, situations were such, his screams were becoming less loud, he was leaving, and he could see it.

Finally, he gave up!

He succumbed to the situations, his undying willingness and love towards his “family” costed him his life, and , he had nobody to hear his cries his screams, which would never be heard any more.

Ramlal, questioned God in heavens, “Why did no one come to rescue me. I would not have mind dying in the hospital bed, had I got to see one face for which I lived?”

God replied, “Son, from your perspective, they were all you had, everything that you wanted, yes, they were the solace you required, and the happiness you desired. But life, rather the perspective was not the same from the other side. They had their families and were busy there. They did not hear your cries, because your hearts were not connected. We choose people we love, and it is unconditional, you loved them with all your heart, but for them, you were an ordinary postman, who brings some smile to their cause. Had it not been for your profession, who knows they might not have loved you the same way”

Ramlal understood the point. Love is unconditional.

Time Travel

At some point of time or the other in our lives, all of us must have thought about having a time machine. What if we could back in time and change things that we felt should not have happened, or just witness certain things in past, may be just being an invisible person and watching around everything like a wandering soul. What if we could just go ahead in the future and see what lies there. All these questions which seem so strikingly fascinating make a time machine all so desirous.

If a time machine was ever possible, I would have visited the future not to unravel what it has in store for me, that perhaps would make life less magical, less mystical, instead I would visit it to witness the end of the world, that day in 2012 when it is presumed to be scheduled. I’ll rather just be there to witness the hysteria all around, to see what I’ll be doing then in the final few hours. Will the world really come to an end, and if yes, how?

It would be interesting to observe how everything would change for that one final day. The doomsday would be the only day money would be powerless, and would be there for the taking, there won’t be any fear of burglary and theft. Sleep, one of the most priceless assets would not be pursued, for everyone is going to be asleep in a few while. When breaking a window pane won’t call for a repair and when eating and drinking won’t be as much fun as they are deemed to be.

To see all this happen would be interesting for sure, but what would be more interesting would be to sight that the end did that was vouched for did not happen. There would be ruckus for sure. All the actions in the preceding two hours might just have to be regretted, a shopkeeper might regret giving all its goods for free to everyone as the world was supposed to end. A thief might regret a chance that he let go by just because he knew the end was here. Merely, a thought is exciting enough.

Another reason that calls for a peak into the future might be the advent of robots and machinization. Though we have had TV shows and cartoons giving glimpses about how the future might be shaped up for us, but to actually be in a world where we have everything at our command with a tinge of perfection would be inexplicable.

If destiny may have it, we might just get to see a time machine as the next big thing in the world of innovation. Though from a superficial point of view, it sounds amazingly fantastic, but then everything in life comes with its own terms and conditions. There might be a cost to pay for fast forwarding to the future that we might have to pay. To live it with an element of uncanniness is something that was chosen, and to not fiddle with it might well perhaps be the finest things to do.

But then who knows we all might have come here in this generation through a time machine only, perhaps, we don’t realize it. Ponder over it, for it might just be the case.

20 things you should not miss in your lives: Part 2 (21-40)

After the response  20 things you should not miss in your lives got, it became almost imperative for me to write 21-40 things that should not be missed. It was just a matter of time that I make up my mind to write it. As a result, here I am giving you my next post. Without wasting any further time and flexing of your muscles, I would straight away get going with the post.

21. Stay awake for a few days at stretch. This works good in a few ways. You'll lose your health and gain people who care for you. And you will never feel that life can't be challenging.

22. Never tell all your secrets to people. There should be somethings only between you and yourself. They will remain with you always.

23. Take blame for a misdeed you haven't done. It's not always a Hi-Hello that starts friendships, gestures also do!

24. Date yourself. Go for a movie alone, then lunch, an evening stroll and then dinner. Being self-dependent need not always be on monetary terms.

25. Call random numbers and blurt out things randomly. They would mind but it's ok, they would smile thinking about it later. So, worth doing it anyways!

26. Make sure that atleast one of your teachers know you well enough, though the reason may not always be good. I say that because when you decide to visit your school/college after 10 years, you would have a reason to look up a face there, and all they are gonna remember about you would be that you were their student, good or bad won't matter then.

27. Call a radio station once and dedicate a song to your loved one. Your small gestures mean may be the world to someone.

28. Spend one full day honestly. Even if that means paying a hefty amount for a minor breach of traffic rule, or telling your parents that you got drunk last night. You would get into trouble and might even feel like not doing this, but you'll be at a different level, believe me!

29. List down all your desires and give that paper to your best critic. The rest would be history.

30. Smile at strangers. Some of them would give obnoxious looks, some would just move away, but there would be some who would just smile back.

31. Imitate people around you, crack jokes on them, write about their antics, draw a funny sketch of them, create a parody about them. Not only is this fun, but you might accidentally meet the artist in you.

32. Break into your friend's house silently at night to give them a surprise. Doesn't matter if you get caught or not, you would have a feeling of content that you followed your heart and did not worry about society nuances.

33. Irritate people and then laugh at them. They won't hit you anyways.

34. Always be well aware of your dreams and fantasies. And keep them separate. They are our best companions at different times.

35. Create a fake account on Facebook/Gmail, not with any evil intentions, but with a motto to explore the different kinds of people. Chat about anything to them, since they don't know of your identity, you can say anything without bothering much.

36. Watch a sport you hate the most. It's never too late before you start to live.

37. In extreme anger, just tear off a notebook of yours. This would not only help to alleviate your anger but when you are out of your anger phase, you would realize that anger only breaks things that you later cannot make.

38. Wake up one morning and book tickets for your friends and yourself to a hill station, all by yourself. Some of your friends would refuse, you might also incur monetary loss, but some would agree and you would have the time of your life. Money would not seem as much then!

39. Abuse, use slangs, experience the side of yourself, you hate, or you thought never existed.

40. Hate mistakes, but don't hate the defaulters. If they knew it was a mistake, they might not have done it. Spare a thought before you act. Life allows you that much time.

Yes, this 40th point does mark the ending of the post. I must confess these posts take longer time than usual, for me atleast. I hope this one is also worth it as the previous two:  20 things you should not miss in your lives and  25 things worth experiencing

Life is all about making most of the moments we have lying here and there.

I dream about.....A moment lost in time

The boy told me that it was the usual way he has been spending his days ever since he can remember. Deep inside, I knew that line pricked me, and it made me restless of not having enough potential to help him in any way. Kunal, the boy, I happened to meet accidentally as the park used to fall in the way of my destination. And I could almost find him doing something or the other which did not make any sense to me.

Being from a poor family, his parents could not even afford enough money to educate him. But there was something uncanny about the attitude Kunal used to carry with himself. If I am to be believed, his attitude was the only thing he had. It was a God-gifted one.

Unlike his elder brother, he would never go begging in front of people, even if it meant no bread at the end of the day. Initially, I would not talk to him, and shy away from the incredulous shabbiness he carried with himself. But with a joyous aroma that he used to create, everyone on the way used to share a laugh or two with him.

That day when I was not in a hurry, I decided to look at his antics from a distance. It was something different that day. He was not the usual bubble of joy, he used to be everyday. He was searching for something.

I wanted to know what was he upto. As I moved closer to him, he took notice of me and was back to his normal bubbly self (which I used to witness everyday) in a jiffy. From our past interactions, I knew he was the kind who would not even have sympathy for charity. Thus, that sudden act of change was expected. I queried him with what he was doing. Initially reluctant, later he replied that this was what he has been doing ever since he can remember. What followed was a chat which I can perhaps never forget. Each word that he spoke hurled questions at me. I left with ample food for thought with me.

On repeated poking of what he was doing in the park, Kunal told me that he was searching for something. Searching for a moment lost in time. He told me that they once had all the basic amenities to sustain life with, and he also used to go to school, but then during an earthquake, they lost everything. Their family moved to city in search of setting up a world of their own, but everything failed weirdly.

From then, Kunal used to come everyday to the park and search for those short-lived yet happy but lost moments. His story not only gave me jitters but also made me realize how crucial can memories be when you are caught up with solitude and helplessness from all sides. The intensity of his words was noticeable when he said I have only one dream, I dream about those moments lost in time.

I could not get past the thoughts of that encounter with Kunal as those words were still striking me back and forth. I don't know how many times in future I am gonna meet Kunal, and for how long, but for the memories he has given me, I would always be thankful, simultaneously, awe-inspired by the uncanny attitude and would never let those moments dissolve in time.

P.S: This post is an entry at Blogjunta Dreams Contest to be judged by Jyoti Arora, author of Dream's Sake

Thank God, it happened!

For some heavenly reason, it was raining mercilessly from the time I had woken up in the morning. I was hopping between the window-side and the balcony of my house for the past 1 hour, it was 6 now. Yes, I had gotten up at 5, perhaps by the sound of the rain. I was hoping against hope for the rainfall to cease knowing that even if it did, me reaching college was next to impossible. After having realized that it was going to be a day at home, I moved inside with dropped shoulders (going to college was something I simply loved!).

With such a start to the day, I had almost figured out what a day it was gonna be. Exams were nowhere in the vicinity of time, so picking up course books was beyond the bounds of imagination. Neither did I have any novel, the newspaper wasn't available that day, and I was sick of watching stuff which self-proclaim them to be entertaining.

I tried doing things that didn't make any sense but sufficed for killing time, but at the end they were good for nothing as I had a good 12-15 hours to bypass and sleep had decided to pen down a whole new tale of betrayal with me.

I did not realize but after the initial phase of boredom was over, the day started to flow at an easy pace. The distinctly evident rainbow in the sky and the strands of mild sunlight showing up on the floor through window and door were pleasant and nearly perfect. I could hear a song playing in the background, almost.

And those tears flowing out were a clear sign of a person breaking down to no one else but himself. They were sign of a human being breaking down just for the sake of holding up tears for perhaps, too long. Those tears meant a lot, specially when you know what it meant to cry without having to answer any questions and without owing any awkward explanations to anyone. And without the rainfall could actually stop, it had started again.

Before I came to terms with actually I passed by, I realized that I have had one of the most awesome instances of my life. Yes, crying did give me a comfort, which I never thought it could ever. The very embrace of those droplets on my hand were warm enough to get out the frustration and the feeling of holding up all that while. Then I knew why that feeling of angst was arising time and again when I was forced to spend a day at home, alone!

I wish there are more such days once in a while, or rather some extra minutes in a day to retrospect, love and meet yourself. That day I met myself, after quite a while. Trust me, it was completely my pleasure! J

It is worth it, absolutely! Before you head towards this phase of your life, "Years will pass...We'll let days go by...sitting in an office cabin...sometimes our heart may even cry... We had a choice...We chose listening to the brain... Now We have made a living but only have memories down the lane..."
